Research Interests

  • Remote sensing of global cloud properties from multispectral and hyperspectral data
  • Development of ice cloud bulk single-scattering property models
  • Investigation of decadal trends in global cloud properties derived from satellite data
  • Comparison of cloud properties from passive and active sensors (e.g., CALIPSO to MODIS)
  • PyroCumulonimbus (PyroCb) events, which drive smoke into the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere
  • Impact of smoke on ice cloud properties

  • Invited Speaker, Gordon Research Conference on Radiation and Climate, 2013
  • Co-chair from inception through 2017: International Clouds Working Group (ICWG), under the umbrella of the Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites (CGMS). The ICWG-CGMS provides an international forum for the exchange of technical information on cloud property retrievals from geostationary and polar orbiting meteorological satellite systems. The ICWG formed from the cloud retrieval evaluation workshops (CREWs, four held before formation of the ICWG). The goal is for the international community of cloud retrieval scientists to get together every couple of years and chat about things.
